OUR NARRATIVE
To my mind, one of the most extraordinary survivors from antiquity; the Ara Pacis.
I could go on about how the senate of Rome commissioned this altar in 13BC in honour of Augustus and the peace following his return from Spain and Gaul … but really … just look at it! It is breath-taking. It even has its own museum.
The reliefs carved onto its upper surfaces depict scenes of sacrifice, religious procession, warriors and also features members of the imperial family. Below are scenes of nature. The reliefs would originally have been painted.
It isn’t completely original, some of its structure having been faithfully reconstructed in luna marble as per the original, providing a complete canvas for the reliefs that had been found. These reliefs are also incomplete and some damaged, but the effect is stunning. I don’t visit Rome without going to enjoy it.
