OUR NARRATIVE

This Curved funerary relief from the early first century AD origins are unknown. During the Middle Ages, the block was reused as the threshold of a workshop on Via Biberatica, the ancient Roman road within Trajan's market.
The appearance of the woman’s coiffure and the stylistic features allow the frieze to be dated to about 20-40 AD: this period saw a massive production of funerary portraits destined for the population's middle classes, mostly freedmen, all characterized by highly realistic facial features.
Picture taken February 25 at the Centrale Montemartini in Rome
