OUR NARRATIVE

The Villa Petraro was discovered by chance in 1957, and lies north east of Stabiae. In ancient times it is thought this property stood on the Sarno plain, bordering the road from Stabia and Nuceria.
It was a rustic villa, built in the Augustan age, and it is speculated that it was undergoing restoration and an “upgrade” when Vesuvius erupted.
Only around half of the villa was excavated, then reburied, but not before some beautiful decorative pieces were removed from the private baths here; most notably some delicate stucco work. This is one such fragment.
