OUR NARRATIVE

The excavations at Ostia Antica near Rome have revealed 26 bath houses so far. This is one I stumbled across in my last visit in October 22, and it is relatively small and off the normal beaten track. I have a particular fondness for a mosaic floor and so this one caught my eye.

Known as the “Baths of the Jealous One” after an inscription found in an adjoining shop, these baths were integrated into the town’s fabric and probably barely noticeable from the street. Despite this lack of grandiosity from the outside, they appear to have been richly decorated and in the baths’ frigidarium you can still find marble around the pool, as well as the mosaic floors and decorated plasterwork.

This area is the vestibule and while the baths were built in circa 50AD, most of the mosaics date from a restoration early in the 3rd century AD.
