OUR NARRATIVE

The Piazzetta di San Marco is an open space in Venice joining the lagoon shore with the main Piazza San Marco and Basillica. To our left is the Doge’s Palace and to our right the Jacopo Sansovino Biblioteca, or Biblioteca Marciana.

As no doubt by design, the 2 central granite columns draw the eye. They were erected here in 1268 and “came from the east” originally. The obvious speculation is that they came originally from Constantinople, but that is unproven. Rumours of a third “lost” column in the lagoon persist to this day but it has never been found.

Both carry symbols of Venice. On the right Saint Theodore, who was the patron of the city before St Mark. On the left is the Lion of Venice which is the symbol of St Mark. The columns and statues all have ancient origins.

Executions were held between these 2 columns in medieval times. A superstition that it is “unlucky” to walk between the columns persists to this day.

I ventured into St Marks Square early in the morning on this day in 2016, with the intention of getting some pictures with no crowds and the sunrise. I ended up literally tripping over photographers with the same idea
