OUR NARRATIVE

These magnificent equine bronzes once stood as part of a quadriga (4 horses drawing a chariot), atop a triumphal arch or tower at the Hipprodrome of Constantinople. Looted from Constantinople during the fourth crusade of 1204; they have (mostly) been in Venice ever since.
Most scholars date these from the 2nd or 3rd century AD, but some claim an older Greek heritage, maybe back to the 4th or 5th century BC.
In 1797, Napoleon had the horses forcibly removed from the basilica and carried off to Paris, where they were used in the design of the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel together with a quadriga. They were returned to Venice in 1815.
