OUR NARRATIVE

The story of Amore and Psiche has inspired artists since the fourth century BC. Psiche was a mortal woman of extraordinary beauty, and draws the admiration and sometimes workship of others; the “second coming of Venus”. Of course, Venus was offended.

Venus dispatches her son Cupid to exact her revenge upon Psiche; the ancient gods could be jealous and capricious. The plan was to shoot Psiche with his arrow, making her fall in love with something hideous, but Cupid scratched himself with his arrow at the crucial moment and falls in love with her himself.

The only extended version of this story that has survived comes from the second century AD, and this wonderful sculptural group is from Ostia Antica and dates from the fourth century AD.
