OUR NARRATIVE

This was my first walk down the Appian Way near Rome back in 2016. Having set out from the Baths of Caracalla early on a crisp December morning, by this stage I was beginning to wonder if I hadn’t been overly ambitious! It was worth it however. I recall stopping here, then walking from side to side, making sure to touch each stone across the roads breadth. Knowing that this road, built in 312BC, had been witness to events and people of which we read but cannot get near, it was a rather childish attempt to somehow touch history. I knew that I had fleetingly stood on the same spot as Cicero, Caesar, Pompey, and any number of names that have strode out of books I had devoured over the years.

This is the Via Appia; the queen of roads. The superhighway of antiquity and the venue for innumerable stories, triumphs and tragedies.
