OUR NARRATIVE

The space inside the Pantheon is awe inspiring experience for the first time visitor, and I remain stunned by it. No amount of reading really prepares you for what you see. The dome is larger than St Peter’s at 142 feet in diameter, and nearly 2000 years later, remains the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world. The walls and floor are clad in marble, ancient columns decorate the niches where the 12 Gods of the ancient pantheon once stood. But the dome! You can’t get away from it, and while magnificent today with the sun streaming in through the oculus, in ancient times it is thought this was decorated in dark blues and gold with stars representing the heavens. If not true, then I would like to imagine it that way myself and will remain true at least in my imagination.

The beauty of the Pantheon is that you largely don’t need much imagination. Unlike most of Rome’s ancient monuments, that lay largely in ruins and stripped of their grandeur, the Pantheon by a miracle has retained almost all. So much so that you need to remind yourself that this isn’t the same as the many beautiful renaissance churches you can visit, but this predates anything created by Michelangelo or Da Vinci by over a thousand years … and still stands!
