OUR NARRATIVE

Leading up to the temple of Victory on the Palatine Hill in Rome was the Clivus Victoriae; a road along which the wealthy built their homes in the republican period.
 
As the republic gave way to the principate, Tiberius had a splendid house built here which later formed the core of the Domus Tiberiana; built on the northwest slope of the Palatine Hill in the first century AD, it was the first Imperial palace.
 
Nero, Domitian and Hadrian made significant additions and eventually the Clivus Victoriae became part of the palace service area, with structures covering the road in many places.
