OUR NARRATIVE

Verona’s theatre was built on the Greek model of using a natural hill rather than creating a free standing structure. Started in the late first century BC, it developed into an enormous complex with a temple standing atop the hill and a river embankment built to protect it from flooding. While the ruins today are beautiful, you really do need to explore the hill to appreciate the size of the complex in antiquity; the entire hillside littered with columns, structures and masonry pieces.
 
Here I am standing at the “first promenade” looking down on the theatre; above me is a second promenade and above that the temple once stood. If you stood across the river looking at this from the city during the early imperial period, it must have been a stunning sight to behold.
