PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This fine art poster features a detailed depiction of the Tomb of Gens Istacidia, part of Pompeii's Necropolis of the Herculaneum Gate.

OUR NARRATIVE

Of the many tombs outside the Herculaneum Gate at Pompeii, the Tomb of Gens Istacidia stands out due to the partial reconstruction of the circular aedicula shown here. Although the owners were clearly a wealthy and locally influential family, they are not mentioned by any ancient sources outside some localised inscriptions.
There is evidence to suggest an association with this family and the nearby Villa of the Mysteries via a freedman of the family called L. Istacidius Zosimus. A bronze seal at the Villa carries his name, but scholars disagree whether he was a late owner, or maybe supervised the reconstruction of the Villa after the earthquake of 62AD for the family. Neither theory has been proven, but are both plausible.
